: World literacy day

Today is International Literacy Day.

A day set-aside by the untied nations to recognise the crucial role
literacy plays in the socio-political and economic development of nations.

A statement by the state commissioner for education, Dame Alice Lawrence
Nemi said the theme for this year’s celebration literacy and empowerment
is timely as literacy provides a solid foundation for poverty eradication
and meeting the Millenium Development Goals.

Dame Nemi said to achieve the Millenium Development Goals, the state
government is providing schools infrastructure and establishing model
primary and secondary schools in urban and rural communities.

She said, the government is also organising training programmes for
teachers, ensuring prompt payment of teachers’ salaries as well as
ensuring effective supervision of schools.

The Commissioner said twenty-four rural women learning centres and adult
education centres have also been established across the state to provide
literacy education to the citizenry.

She therefore called on rivers people, corporate bodies and
Non-Governmental Organisations to collaborate with the state government to
achieve a literate society.
