IGLOBE IN 60' INTRODUCTION

Land is one of the most critical resources ever known to man. Same for ownership of littoral boundaries and airspace.

It is for this critical nature of land, sea and air boundaries that individuals, organizations, communities, States and nations have gone to war or engaged in hitler and long drawn legal battles; all in a bid to protect their territorial rights of ownership.

In many traditional African Societies, disputes and disagreements over lands, have resulted to unending wars, leading lo massive destruction of lives and property

The reason for this phenomenon is not far-fetched; as claims over territorial boundaries often based on oral histories and traditional records passed on from generation to generation.

However, in most developed societies of today, resort to the use of traditional methods in the determination of ownership of lands and landed properties have been jettisoned as a result of the introduction of modern scientific methods of boundaries delineation and demarcation.

Hence in Nigeria, some State Governments have adopted this scientific technique which emphasis the use of the Geographic Information System (GIS) to capture, store analyse, manage and present data that are limited to the management of lands and other matters related to the determination of territorial boundaries.

But besides the determination of right of ownership to land and other related resources and their management, what are other advantages related to adoption of the GIS?

What are the possible implication of the application of GIS to traditional land ownership?

Is the application of GIS, a ploy by the Government and the elite in the society ownership of their God-Given resource?

These are some of the questions we shall be finding answers to tonight as we bring on the Globe In 60', Hon, Barr. Ezemonye Ezekiel-Amadi, the Rivers State Commissioner of Lands and Survey on our programme tonight.
