The African Union (AU) has thrown its weight behind Nigeria’s coordinating
minister of the economy and minister of finance Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweal for
the soon-to-be vacant presidency of world bank.
Reports say prime minister of Ethiopia Meles Zenawi, the chairperson of
the African union commission dr. Jean ping and African ministers of
finance, planning and economic development have endorsed her at a meeting
in Addis Ababa Ethiopia.
A statement titled Africa supports dr. Ngozi Okonjo Iweala as Africa’s
sole candidate for the presidency of the world bank posted on the AU’S
website said that AUC is pleased to note that Africa has such a nominee in
the person of Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, who possesses undisputed
credentials in terms of her technical and managerial expertise as well as
a strong track record as a development professional, both inside and
outside the world bank.
It said Dr. Okonjo-Iweala has spent more than two decades in the world
bank, rising through the ranks to the top management level as managing
director greeting her to brings on board a rich experience of managing a
very complex economy.

Meanwhile, in an interview with news men Okonjo-Iweala urged the world
bank’s one hundred and eighty-seven members to hold true to their pledge
for an open merit-based process.
She also urged the United States and Europe to be fair in their choice for
the position, insisting that emerging economies must be given a fair shot
at leading the multilateral institution or they will end up going their
own way.

ajuru university
The National Universities Commission (NUC) has approved a new name for the
rivers state-owned university of education.
The institution is to be known as ‘Ignatius Ajuru University of
Education’, Rumuolumeni, in Obio/Akpor local government area.
Acting vice chancellor of the university, Prof. Rosemond Osahogulu stated
this at the flag-off of a five-day training workshop on information and
communications technology for senior lecturers of tertiary institutions in
the state organised by the university in collaboration with the national
universities commission.
Prof. Osahogulu who was accompanied by the chairman of the university’s
governing board and former deputy governor of old rivers state, Eze Dominc
Anucha said the approval was sequel to a formal request to NUC on ways to
revamp of the institution.
Commenting on the on-going ICT training workshop, Prof. Osahogulu said the
choice of U.O.E. was based on the existence of a state-of-the-art ICT
centre at the university.
Director, information and communication technology in the institution,
Prof. Dele Osahogulu expressed delight over the ICT equipment, adding that
it has greatly assisted the university in global teaching and learning
practices.
He called on the participants to make good use of knowledge acquired and
also procure their personal computers.
Some of the participants and facilitators commended the organisers for the
gesture which they said will greatly assist in their academic programmes.
